Costa de la Luz - Huelva

Costa de la LuzThe Huelva area runs from the Guadiana river that separates Spain and Portugal to the Guadalquivir river in the east. This coastline is dotted with small ports and tourist resorts catering mainly for Spanish tourists. The landscape is very picturesque in parts with long sandy beaches, pine woods, dunes, marshes, river estuaries and some protected coastal reserves. In july and august it is pretty busy with holiday makers but far less crowded than probably any other stretch of coastline in the south of Spain. When you are talking about beaches well over 25km long it shouldn’t be too hard to find yourself a secluded spot if that’s what you are after.

Although exposed, the beaches are not as windswept as the Cadiz section of the coast. The area has always been very popular with Spanish tourists and as a result the fishing villages, ports and holiday resorts that you might find dotted around the coastline have done well to retain their Spanish identity unlike their counterparts in the Costa del Sol for example. There is a high concentration of marshes and river estuaries, making travelling short distance sometimes longer than you would imagine but greatly adding to the natural beauty and unspoilt atmosphere.

With comparatively less visitors than some of the other coastlines in Andalucí it is still possible to find yourself a relatively secluded spot on the beach, even during the height of summer. One such beach is the Playa de Castilla east of Matalascañas that runs alongside the Parque Nacional de Donaña, a 25km-long stretch that is only accessible on foot. Alternatively, there is the 22km-long beach, also part of the Playa de Castilla, which runs between Matalascañas and Mazagón, which is long enough to find a bit of peace and quiet. To the west of Huelva City is the Barra de El Rompido, which you can reach from La Antilla or El Rompido.

Huelva City is not the most beautiful location from the outset as it is surrounded by oil refineries and industry. There are parts of the coastline that in recent times have fallen prey to some insensitive developers but largely the coastline retains its natural beauty.
